Search engine optimization tips

SEO-TipsAfter your website optimization is done it is time to make sure that search engine spiders will find your website. It's also important to build up as many inbound links as possible. Building up your link popularity correctly will insure good ranking on all major search engines.

Identify you industry and your competition. Create list of keywords. This is the most important step in your website's search engine optimization. First thing to do here is to figure out your niche. In other words you need to identify which industry your business belongs to. Once you are done with that the next step is to identify your competition. In order to identify your competition you will need to get 5-10 keywords that relate to what your business is doing. For example, if you run a travel agency then possible keywords for your industry would be "airfare", "vacation packages", "bus tours", "worldwide cruises", etc. Other possible keywords can be generated using tools like Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool. By searching for those keywords in Google and visiting top 5-10 results you will have a pretty good idea about your competition. Also, make sure to look at the total number of results Google gives you for that keyword, if it is over 1-2 million then that keyword is probably too competitive for you to successfully rank on the first couple of result pages.

Adding keywords to your content. After you have chosen 5-10 keywords that you can work with you will need to add them to your content. Your major keywords should be placed inside of your meta tags (meta tags are discussed in detail in website design optimization section) It is a good idea to place your most important keyword(s) in your TITLE, your DESCRIPTION and of course your KEYWORDS tags. That will give spider an idea about your site. Then spider will go look for those keywords in your body section. Please note that some spiders skip your keyword tag all together and move on to your body section to figure out which keywords best describe your website themselves.

Keyword selection is the most important part of search engine optimization. Picking correct keywords is being half way to great search engine ranking. After picking a general term for your industry and searching for it on Google or any other major search engine you probably realized that for most industries competition is outrageous. Even if your website is well optimized for those broad keywords it will still take you years and years to build up the same link popularity as top websites. With that said, the only solution to this problem is to look for more specific keywords will less competition. Tools like WordTracker help you do just that. It will figure out the ratio between competition and numbers of searches per month and find good keywords with good traffic and relatively low competition.
